Rare enough to stop a room, the variegated form of Monstera lechleriana brings something the solid-green version simply cannot — large, glossy, arrow-shaped leaves splashed with creamy white and soft yellow, with a marbled quality that means no two leaves look identical. Unlike its close relative Monstera adansonii, this variety is notably slower to develop leaf fenestrations, so what you get right now is a lush, bushy plant whose visual drama comes entirely from that striking variegation. It arrives in a 14.5cm pot, already full and upright — the kind of plant that earns its spot as a room centrepiece from day one. Extremely rare and actively sought by collectors across India, this is one of those plants you add to cart before you overthink it.
Watering

Water when the top layer of soil is dry.

Light

Thrives in bright to medium indirect light — several hours of bright indirect light daily produces the best growth and most vivid variegation. Does not require direct sunlight and can also grow well under artificial light sources.

Pet Friendliness

Keep out of pet reach — This plant and your furry friends cannot become the best buds.

Fertilizer

Feed occasionally with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season.

Also Known As: Monstera Lechleriana Albo, Monstera Lechleriana Albo-Variegata

Color may appear slightly different in person due to photographic lighting and monitor settings.

Every leaf on this Monstera lechleriana arrives looking like it was painted by hand — dark green broken up by irregular patches of creamy white and soft yellow, with a smooth, glossy finish that catches the light beautifully. The arrow-shaped leaves grow in a bushy, upright habit that makes this plant look full and substantial from the moment you unbox it.

About Monstera Lechleriana Variegated

Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, Monstera lechleriana is a climbing aroid that grows in the forest understory — reaching upward through dappled light beneath a dense jungle canopy. The variegated form replaces the standard solid-green leaves with creamy white and marbled patterning, making it visually distinct even within the broader Monstera family. As a climber, it benefits from a moss pole or trellis over time; given room to ascend, the leaves grow noticeably larger and will eventually develop the fenestrations (holes) the genus is famous for — though this variety develops those holes much more slowly than Monstera adansonii, so patience is part of owning one. It prefers an airy, well-draining soil mix rich in organic matter — a combination of potting soil, coco coir, orchid bark, and perlite works well.

Variegated Climbing Houseplant for Your Living Room

Statement Plant for a Living Room Corner

Few indoor plants for living rooms in India deliver this level of visual impact — the contrast between the dark green base and the creamy white variegation is the kind of thing guests notice and ask about. Placed near a bright window in a living room, hallway, or reading nook, this plant does not quietly blend in. It becomes the focal point.

A Collector's Variety That's Genuinely Hard to Find

The variegated form of Monstera lechleriana is listed among the rarest cultivars of the species — even specialist nurseries struggle to stock it consistently. Owning one puts you in a small group of serious plant collectors, and the marbled patterning on each leaf ensures your plant looks unlike anyone else's.

Rewarding to Grow as It Climbs

Given a moss pole and bright indirect light, this plant actively changes over time — leaves get larger, variegation patterns shift with each new unfurling, and the climbing growth habit adds a dynamic quality that static foliage plants can't match. It can grow over 6 feet long in good conditions, making it a long-term investment in your space.

Tolerates Average Indian Home Conditions

Standard household temperatures and humidity levels are perfectly adequate for this plant — it does not demand a greenhouse setup. It is also relatively drought-tolerant, making it more forgiving than many other variegated aroids if you occasionally miss a watering cycle.

White Variegated Monstera: What Makes the Lechleriana Different

When people search for a white variegated Monstera, they often land on the Thai Constellation or the Albo Borsigiana — but the Lechleriana Variegated offers something distinct. The variegation here tends to appear as broad, marbled sweeps of creamy white and yellow across the full leaf surface, rather than the more defined sector variegation seen on the Albo. The leaves are also arrow-shaped and notably glossy, giving them a more architectural quality. And unlike tissue-culture-produced Thai Constellations, the Lechleriana Variegated is propagated from cuttings — meaning the variegation pattern is naturally occurring and genuinely unique on every plant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions

It thrives with several hours of bright indirect light daily — an east- or west-facing window in an Indian home works well. Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the variegated portions of the leaf faster than the green areas.

Take a stem cutting with at least two nodes and one leaf, place it in room-temperature water ensuring the nodes are submerged, and move it to a warm, bright spot — roots typically appear within a couple of weeks. Transfer to soil once roots reach about 2–3 cm, and keep the mix evenly moist for the first week or two while the cutting adjusts.

Yes — toxicity to pets is a real concern with this plant, as it is toxic to both cats and dogs if ingested. Keep it out of reach of pets and children.

It grows more slowly than many other Monsteras, and fenestrations (leaf holes) develop much later than in Monstera adansonii — so do not expect holes quickly. The best way to encourage larger leaves and eventual fenestrations is to provide a moss pole and consistent bright indirect light.

Yellowing leaves are almost always a sign of overwatering — this variety is sensitive to wet roots, so check that the top half of the soil has dried before watering again. Less commonly, low light or cold draughts from an AC vent can also cause premature yellowing.

The variegation on this plant does not revert in response to light levels — it is a stable genetic trait. However, in consistently low light the plant will grow more slowly and may be more prone to stress, which affects overall health rather than the patterning itself.

Repot once every one to two years, or when roots begin emerging from the drainage holes — spring or early summer is ideal. Move up to a pot 4–5 cm wider in diameter and refresh the soil mix at the same time.
